Ever since the Iranian Morality Police beat to death Masha Amini, a 22-year-old woman who had been arrested for not wearing her hijab correctly, violent unrest has taken over the streets of Iranian cities.

Women are defying the regime by burning their hijabs. Iranian authorities have responded by beating and shooting demonstrators. They have also attempted to turn off the Internet in Iran, the theory being that the protests will die if the protestors have no means of communicating with one another or the outside world.

However, the Iranian mullahs have not counted on Elon Musk, the South African-born American businessman who has won fame and fortune with electric cars and rocket ships. For the past several years, Musk has been deploying a constellation of small satellites called Starlink that connects the world with voice, text, and data communications. According to Interesting Engineering, Musk has activated Starlink to use the Iranian rebels.

Anyone who desires to access the Starlink system will need ground systems that can receive signals from the satellite constellation. Musk will not only need an exemption from the Treasury and State Departments economic sanctions to send these ground stations to Iran but a way to smuggle them across the border.

The last thing that the Iranian mullahs want would be technology that would allow their people to access information unimpeded by official censorship and jamming,

The two government departments’ guidance is somewhat confusing, according to Reuters.

“A Treasury official briefing reporters said: ‘Our understanding of Starlink is that what they provide would be commercial grade, and it would be hardware that’s not covered in the general license; so that would be something they would need to write into Treasury for.’

“A U.S. State Department spokesperson later said of Friday’s updated license that it was self-executing and that ‘anyone who meets the criteria outlined in this general license can proceed with their activities without requesting additional permissions.’”

Musk has not commented on the government’s confusion over whether he does or does not have permission to start sending Starlink ground stations to Iran. However, the sooner he can begin the process, the better. Iranian dissidents who have been able to post on Twitter have expressed their desire to get access to Starlink to continue coordinating their protests against the regime.
