Mossad Director David Barnea called the new nuclear deal negotiated between Iran and the West "a strategic disaster" that is "very bad for Israel" on Thursday, The Times of Israel announced.

Barnea stressed that the emerging deal, mainly resulting from talks between Iran and the United States, is "ultimately built on lies" as he implored international leaders not to rush into signing on.

The Israeli intelligence leader announced of the possibility that Iran obtains nuclear weapons that Mossad "is preparing and knows how to remove that threat."

"If we don't take action, Israel will be in danger," he continued.

Barnea's strong statement arrives as the U.S. and Iran inch close to executing a form of the original Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) passed under former U.S. President Barack Obama.

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell recently announced that the U.S. could reply as shortly as this week to a final draft proposal that would restore a form of the 2015 JCPOA accord.

"I hope that this response allows us to end the negotiations," Borrell announced. "That's my hope, but I cannot assure you that this will happen."

In the meantime, former Israeli Prime Minister and present leader of the opposition, Benjamin Netanyahu, joined Barnea in denouncing the new nuclear deal as "even worse" than the previous one.

"They're going to get hundreds of billions of dollars in short order, and that's going to help them finance their various proxies," Netanyahu explained to Al Arabiya on Wednesday.

The prime minister pointed both to the trip to Washington this week by national security adviser Eyal Hulata for "very intensive discussions" on the matter and to Defense Minister Benny Gantz's visit to the US, which began on Thursday.

Before departing for Washington, Gantz tweeted that the purpose of his trip was "to send a clear message in regard to the negotiations between Iran and powers on the nuclear deal: A deal that does not knock Iran's abilities back by years and does not restrain it for years ahead, is a deal that will harm global and regional security."

While Gantz was in Washington, Iran conducted a second day of military exercises with combat drones. The drones successfully destroyed many of their intended targets throughout the drills, according to the semi-official Fars News Agency.

The Walla news site argued that Israeli officials are slightly less concerned regarding the possibility of the US granting significant concessions to Tehran in the wake of Hulata's visit to DC on Wednesday.

Citing a senior Israeli official, the report announced that the US had "hardened their position" and declined to make concessions to Iran in response to pressure from Israel.
