Spin City: The $50 Million 'Private' Orgs Are Spending On Migrants In DC Is Actually Public Tax Dollars

'Humanitarian groups in Washington, D.C., could get up to $50 million in extra funding to help migrants being transferred from southern border states' under a proposed bill from congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). What that means is that the humanitarian groups take the credit for aiding the migrants, but the truth is American taxpayers are footing the bill.

Why the Federal Government would mince words like this to fool some Americans is simple, the flood of migrants across the border is an unpopular move by not just conservative standards, but according to polls by Gallup and Rasmussen, even liberals are appaled at the abuse of the open border policy.

The proposed bill would empower the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program by supplying an additional $50 million to go toward humanitarian assistance for migrants arriving in D.C. Congress has already allocated $150 million to the EFSP for migrant aid for the current fiscal year, with about $85 million remaining in that fund as of July 21.

“The governors of Texas and Arizona are exploiting and harming desperate and vulnerable people fleeing dangerous situations in their home countries for political gain,” Norton said in a statement. “I commend the work organizations in D.C. and the National Capital Region have done to assist these migrants, but more funding is needed to assist these families.”

If passed, the legislation would provide additional federal assistance after the Defense Department twice dismissed D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's requests to install National Guard troops to the district. Bowser’s appeal was dropped partly because the department claimed the city already had sufficient funds from FEMA to be used to shelter the immigrants and provide necessary resources. However, Norton contended the influx of migrants to Washington, D.C., and New York has increased funding requests beyond what the EFSP has available.

“Supplemental funding would ensure that the EFSP can continue to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants,” Norton said. “I strongly urge my colleagues to support this bill.”

More than 6,000 migrants have been transported to Washington under initiatives by Govs. Greg Abbott (R-TX) and Doug Ducey (R-AZ), who are protesting what they claim is the Biden administration’s refusal to acknowledge a border crisis. Many of the migrants stopped at the border have been released on humanitarian parole or with notices to appear in immigration court, according to the Associated Press.

Several local groups have stepped in to assist in housing and processing migrants, estimating that monthly costs reach nearly $90,000 to sustain, according to DCist.

Bowser has condemned Ducey’s and Abbott’s endeavors to send migrants to Washington, claiming that the migrants are being “tricked” into traveling farther away from their intended destinations. Local organizations have criticized Bowser’s comments, claiming that about 10% of migrants plan to stay in the Washington, D.C., area but are being denied access to city resources.

Norton’s bill has been referred to the House Committee on Appropriations, where lawmakers will decide whether to recommend it for a vote. If it passes through the committee, the bill will be introduced in the Senate.
