A 2024 presidential run by Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) could benefit former President Donald Trump.

While Cheney has admitted she is “thinking about” running for president, a Yahoo News/YouGov poll released Tuesday showed that if the congresswoman pursued a presidential bid as an independent, she could swing the election in Trump’s favor.

The poll indicated that if the 2024 election were held today with Trump facing off against President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee and Cheney as an independent candidate, Trump would hold an 8-point lead over Biden, 40% to 32%.

However, without Cheney in the race, the poll discovered that Trump would trail Biden by 4 points, 46% to 42%.

The poll results showed that Biden could lose voters with Cheney in the election mix, suggesting Democratic voters may be more likely to break party rank.

Of Cheney’s 11% of the vote, 69% was pulled from Biden, while just 15% came from those likely to vote for Trump.

Cheney lost her Wyoming Republican primary by a double-digit margin last week to Trump-backed attorney Harriet Hageman. The Yahoo News/YouGov poll was conducted from Aug. 18-22 surveying 1,563 U.S. adults with a 2.6% margin of error.

On the heels of being defeated in her primary race for Wyoming’s at-large House seat, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) said that she will make a decision on whether to embark on a presidential bid for 2024 “in the coming months,” potentially teeing up a battle between former President Donald Trump and his most vocal critic.

“I will be doing whatever it takes to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office,” she said during an appearance on NBC's Today show Wednesday morning.

“That's a decision that I'm going to make in the coming months. I'm not going to make any announcements here this morning, but it is something that I am thinking about."

The Wyoming Republican flipped her campaign committee into a leadership PAC, filing to rename it "The Great Task" in the early hours of Wednesday morning, which would allow her to use roughly $7 million in funds for a potential bid for higher office.

Cheney teased a run during her concession speech, which took aim at Trump’s rhetoric and his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, highlighting that President Abraham Lincoln lost races before becoming president.

“The great and original champion of our party, Abraham Lincoln, was defeated in elections for the Senate and the House before he won the most important election of all. Lincoln ultimately prevailed. He saved our union, and he defined our obligation as Americans for all of history,” she said.
