Outgoing Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) said in a promo for her interview that will stream Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that the January 6 Select Committee looking into the Capitol attack was in talks with former Vice President Mike Pence’s legal team over his potential testimony.

ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl said, “One of the key figures here is Mike Pence. He said this week he is willing to testify if you ask. Are you going to ask him?”

Cheney said, “So we’ve been in discussions with his counsel.” She continued, “Look, he played a critical role on January 6. If he had succumbed to Donald Trump's pressure, we would have had a much worse constitutional crisis. And I think that he has, as he’s expressed, concerns about executive privilege, which, you know, I have tremendous respect. I think it’s a hugely important constitutional issue in terms of separation of powers. I believe in executive privilege. I think it matters. But I also think that everyone who has information must step forward when the country has been through something as grave as this. So, I would hope that he will do that.” Karl asked, “So, you think we’ll see him here in September in this room before the committee?”

Cheney said, “I would hope that he will understand how important it is for the American people to know every aspect of the truth about what happened that day.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence said he would mull over a request to appear before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. Still, they suggested that he would have to consider it against the “unprecedented” nature of a Vice President testifying on Capitol Hill.

“If there were an invitation to participate, I would consider it,” Pence said at an event at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. “But you’ve heard me mention the Constitution a few times this morning. Under the Constitution, we have three co-equal branches of government. Any invitation to be directed to me, I would have to reflect on the unique role I was serving in as vice president.”

Pence said it would be “unprecedented in history for a vice president to be summoned to testify on Capitol Hill, but as I said I don’t want to pre-judge.”

“My first obligation is to continue to hold my oath, continue to uphold the framework of government enshrined in the Constitution,” Pence said.
