A recent study shows that a same-sex male couple could have given monkeypox to their four-year-old greyhound, as questions over the virus' human-to-animal transmission further loom.

The Lancet reported the discovery in a medical journal entry published on Wednesday, which observed that the couple's greyhound began contracting the virus almost two weeks into their cases. The first symptoms were anal lesions and spotting on the stomach.

Then, using PCR testing protocol, the researchers confirmed the dog had monkeypox. According to the report, the two men announced that they let their dog sleep in their bed yet consciously attempted to avoid public interactions with different pets and owners.

"This case establishes the possibility of human-to-domestic pet transmission," University of Wisconsin Medical School head Dr. Jonathan Temte informed Newsweek.

"Many species of animals can be infected with monkeypox, but—for the vast majority—we simply do not know how susceptible they are. Furthermore, we do not know the risk for transmission from a pet (such as a dog) to a human," he continued.

Infectious disease specialist Amesh Adalja explained to the outlet that the findings were not surprising, as the virus likely originated in an animal of some kind. However, he assured us that it is probably an uncommon phenomenon.

"The danger with monkeypox passing into animals in non-endemic countries is that it allows the virus to establish a domestic reservoir outside of its usual zone of endemicity," he stated.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 11,177 confirmed monkeypox cases in the United States as of Friday. Worldwide, 12 people have died from the virus, primarily in Spain.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration talks with many companies about bottling millions of new doses of the monkeypox shot. Yet, it could take three to six months to get them prepared for distribution, according to two senior administration officials and two other people with knowledge of the matter.

The administration on Tuesday recommended providers administer the monkeypox vaccine with one-fifth of the normal amount intradermally — between the layers of the skin — to attempt and stretch the supply without sacrificing efficacy.

"This will increase the total number of doses available by 5-fold," Robert Califf, the Food and Drug Administration commissioner, explained to reporters Tuesday.

Nonetheless, officials are uncertain how long that strategy will work, particularly if cases increase sharply in the weeks ahead and whether the virus spreads outside the community of men who have sex with men.

Almost 9,500 monkeypox infections have been reported, according to the CDC, up about 50 percent in the last week. Almost all cases have been reported in men. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky has pressed men who have sex with men, including those vaccinated, to avoid skin-to-skin contact with infected people.

The administration is attempting to shore up more vaccines by striking deals with companies — including Grand River Aseptic Manufacturing in Michigan — to bottle doses, a process known as "fill and finish." The officials announced that bavarian Nordic in Denmark currently stores the vaccine that is required to be bottled. There are as many as 12 million doses available in that stockpile, the two people with knowledge of the matter stated.

Once the deals are finalized and the vaccines bottled, American regulators will likely have to inspect the doses before they are distributed. Depending on what agreements the Biden administration strikes, the procedure could extend into 2023, one of the senior administration officials stated.

That timeline further depends on how many doses the U.S. pulls from the stockpile in Denmark for fill and finish.
