Rep. Liz Cheney on Thursday slammed her fellow GOP lawmakers for the ''sickening'' attacks they have pointed at the FBI agents who implemented a search warrant at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home, saying the comments are putting lives at risk.

''I have been ashamed to hear members of my party attacking the integrity of the FBI agents involved with the recent Mar-a-Lago search,'' the Wyoming congresswoman tweeted. ''These are sickening comments that put the lives of patriotic public servants at risk.''

Cheney's statement comes several days after the FBI searched Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, reportedly looking for classified documents regarding nuclear weapons that the former president supposedly brought to his Florida property when he left office.

Several Republican lawmakers disparaged the FBI after news of the search broke, calling the bureau ''weaponized'' and likened it to an agency that would be found in a Third World country.

Speaking at a Thursday news conference, Attorney General Merrick Garland spoke about the attacks on FBI personnel.

''The men and women of the FBI and the Justice Department are dedicated, patriotic public servants,'' he continued. ''Every day they protect the American people from violent crime, terrorism, and other threats to their safety while safeguarding our civil rights. They do so at great personal sacrifice and risk to themselves. I am honored to work alongside them.''

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said the Justice Department had reached “an intolerable state of weaponized politicization” and vowed that Republicans would conduct oversight of the department if they win back the chamber in the November midterm elections.

“Attorney General Garland, preserve your documents and clear your calendar,” McCarthy said in a statement.

Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, who spears the Senate GOP’s campaign arm, posted that the search was part of a history of the Biden administration's "going after" its political opponents, without offering any corroborating details. Scott also demanded answers about the FBI's actions, insisting that the bureau "must explain what they were doing today & why."

The Republican National Committee's chair, Ronna McDaniel, suggested the FBI activity was a partisan attack.

"Countless times we have examples of Democrats flouting the law and abusing power with no recourse," McDaniel said in a statement, suggesting the only way to stop Democrats "is to elect Republicans in November."
